Step aboard a 19th-century journey down the Nile with Explorers on the Nile, an exhibition of luminous watercolours painted on the spot during an 1890 voyage by Emily Meynell Ingram and Lady Mary Wood. This newly discovered album captures Egypt in vibrant detail, seen through the eyes of two talented amateur artists travelling by dahabiya from Cairo to Luxor. The evening also marked the launch of 'Life on the Desert Edge: Memories of Beit Emery' by Egyptologist Sue Davies, a memoir of exploration and life with her friend and long time collaborator, the late Professor Harry Smith (1928–2024), one of the most distinguished Egyptologists of the postwar period. This private view includes a heartfelt tribute to Harry Smith, celebrating his towering legacy, intellectual brilliance, gentle humour, and decades of archaeological and academic achievements, from surveying Nubia before the Aswan Dam to excavations at Saqqara and Memphis. Artists featured include 19th-century greats such as Albert Goodwin and Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, alongside the rediscovered works of Emily and Mary—untouched and preserved for over a century.
