Former HDFC Bank manager Vinod Kumar, along with his wife Radhika Kumari, left their corporate jobs in Pune after Covid and returned to their village in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand – not just to earn money, but to create employment for non-skilled workers through farming. The early days were tough. In 2021, Vinod lost his first watermelon and tomato crops to heavy rains and lockdown disruptions. With minimal knowledge of fertilizers such as NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potash), losses were heavy. But learning and persistence changed everything. With support from NABARD, Vinod turned his 5-acre farm into Jharkhand’s Smart Farm, installing soil moisture sensors connected to a mobile app and fully automated irrigation systems. This technology allowed precise water use, reduced labour cost, saved time, and increased productivity. Today, Vinod cultivates across nearly 50 acres and runs a business worth ₹1.5 crore annually. His farm now supports more than 50 families, with a vision to provide employment to 500+ people. He has also been honoured by ICAR and former Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda. In 2025, when most farmers abandoned paddy cultivation due to excessive rainfall, Vinod switched to vegetables and sold cauliflower at ₹80 per kg, demonstrating how smart crop planning delivers high profits.
