This is a surgical video of a patient with diabetic retinopathy undergoing a vitrectomy to clear blood from inside the eye. This patient also has a traction retinal detachment. A retinal detachment in this case usually arises when abnormal blood vessels proliferate on the surface of the retina, and pull on the surrounding tissue. A vitrectomy is used by a retina specialist to fix this problem. I have in one hand a light pipe, that helps me see inside the eye. My other hand holds a vitrector, which is a delicate instrument that breaks the vitreous up into little pieces, and removes it from the eye. Once the central vitreous is removed, then delicate peeling of the tissue is performed, sometimes with the aid of steroids to better visualize the anatomy and areas of traction. Once the areas of traction have been relieved, the rest of the vitreous is removed as carefully as possible. Laser is then applied using a laser probe that goes into the eye. I hope that you have find this video helpful. For more information, and other videos, please visit NaderMoinfarMD.com. Thank-you.
