From Neil Young to Nirvana, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, The Eagles to Guns and Roses, Sonic Youth, and Beck, Geffen was a major force in the music industry as we know it today. Meet the Man whose Instagram post of quarantining on his Yacht started a hater backlash so fierce that he made his IG account private. What many don't know is the story of how David Geffen overcame depression and dyslexia, a learning disability to become a music industry and Hollywood Powerbroker. In the Netflix documentary "Inventing David Geffen," he touches on the mental illness his mother struggled with and a burning desire not to be "ordinary," as he put it. David Geffen is ANYTHING but ordinary, especially to a music fan like The Radioactive Patient. Initially, he was an artist's manager and was one of the first to make sure artists were compensated for their songwriting by forming publishing companies. (see career of Laura Nyro) By the time Geffen was thirty, he'd started and sold two record labels and was on his way to forming Geffen Records and in the 90's, the alternative rock imprint DGC (The David Geffen Company) a label that brought us Nirvana, Sloan, Cowboy Junkies, White Zombie, Beck and so many more. Geffen's A&R team also revived Aerosmith's career in the Geffen label. Elton John, Bob Dylan and John Lennon also released albums on Geffen Records. One of my personal favorites is Wang Chung's "To Live and Die in LA' from the movie of the same name starring Willem Dafoe and William Peterson, whose career languished before landing his starring role on CSI. For a long time, no one's known who Carly Simon's hit single, "You're so Vain," off the "No Secrets" album, was actually about. Truth is, 'You're so Vain" is about David Geffen, with whom Simon had dealings when she was in Elektra records. Joni Mitchell's hit single "Free Man In Paris" is also about Geffen. ' Later in life, he came out as a gay man and contributed mightily towards Aids research and therapy efforts, Also founded UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine, which is researching depression and new ways to treat it.
