For ten years plus, I have lived and worked as a Benedictine monk, Catholic monk, — building, praying, tending sheep, and quietly crafting a life of simplicity at the monastery of Christ in the Desert and a monastery in Alabama. But something new is unfolding. In this video, I share a glimpse of autumn at the monastery — the pond, the church, the sheep, and the quiet rhythm of monastic life — leading to something I’ve been discerning for a long time: the beginning of the Hermitage. This is where silence deepens. contemplative life will this be the end of my YouTube channel? not really, prayer and reflecting is needed. Join me as I walk through the monastery grounds and reveal what’s next for The Desert Monk , a small hermitage rising in the desert, built by prayer and calloused hands. “_What are you going to do? Contemplate your belly button?_” my old abbot once joked. Ten years later… here’s my answer. 🔔 Subscribe for updates on the hermitage build, monastic reflections, and life lived close to the silence of God. My YouTube channel is not a promotional platform or a distraction from the hermit’s way. Rather, it is part of documenting my journey — the process, the discernment, the work, the prayer, the silence. The space I am developing is first and foremost a weaving studio/workshop, a place of quiet labour (with sheep-care and building a pipe organ among the tasks). It is not established yet as a fully enclosed hermitage or one where I will be actively hosting guests or teaching retreats. I recognise the concerns around privacy, solitude, and the authentic commitment to the eremitic state. I myself am discerning how to live simply, how to allow silence and solitude to deepen, and how to interface with the world (including via this channel) without losing the essence of the vocation. If you’re wondering “Will there be visitors? Will this be used for retreat leadership?” — for now, the answer is no. My hope is not to build a hermitage as a retreat-centre, but to live quietly, humbly, and contemplatively — and yes, that means the channel will likely evolve to reflect that and maybe eventually fade as well into more silence. I understand that there may be some skepticism. Perhaps it looks contradictory: a hermit with a YouTube channel. But I believe that God calls each of us in our time, in our context, and cruelty or cynicism don’t help the journey. Instead, I invite your prayers, your patience, and your understanding. I’m grateful for your concern — and I hope that what I’m doing can show, in small ways, what the Church means when she recognises a hermit’s life: a life of prayer, solitude, work, and love, not of show-business or artificial isolation. If you’d like to explore further, I encourage you to take a look at the article I mentioned (The Life Of A Hermit: A Glimpse Inside The Little-Known State Of Life - EWTN) which gives a very clear outline of how the eremitic life is understood in our Catholic tradition. Perhaps it can help us to see that the journey is ongoing, variable, and often hidden — even when it seems to be on display. May God bless you abundantly for your honest engagement. I hope this clarifies things, and I remain open to your questions. Peace be with you. #CatholicMonk #Hermitage #MonasticLife #ContemplativeLife #TheDesertMonk #catholicyoutubers Hello, I am Br.
