This is a time lapse video of my painting "Gus," which is oil on a 11 by 14 inch canvas! It started with a simple acrylic under painting with oil on top! ***To see this video without music, I created a version without music! Link Below! • How to Paint Leaves No Music Significantly more time went into doing the background then the kitten itself (which my brother calls Gus). It had a lot of leaves, both in the back and also some up close to the viewer! The goal was to not copy the photo, because that would be insane, but to recreated an illusion of a lot of leaves... some hiding deep in the darkness while others standing out! But it was just as important to create a sense of depth and distance... even if the depth is several feet! To pull that illusion, I used everything from color temperature, contrast, and soft and hard edges! I always feel the background is in a way is part of the supporting cast to the subject matter of a painting! THAT is why I spent a lot of time painting the leaves in this painting! Colors I used in oils were: Viridian Alizarin Crimson Cerulean Blue Cobalt Blue Cobalt Green (for cool leaves in shade) Cobalt Turquoise Light (also for cool leaves in shade) Cadmium Green Pale (bright greens) Cadmium Yellow Cadmium Yellow Pale (really bright leaves) Cadmium Orange (to neutralize greens and create browns) Cadmium Red (barely) ..and of course Titanium White Popular Color Combinations I used were: Viridian and Alizarin Crimson for my dark tones Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Yellow (Regular and Pale) for 1st Green Cerulean Blue and Cadmium Yellow (Regular and Pale) for the 2nd Green Questions? Let me know! And thanks for watching!!
