In Part 7 of our verse-by-verse study through the Book of Revelation, we reach the dramatic seventh seal and the opening of the seven trumpets — a pivotal moment where silence in heaven gives way to escalating divine judgments on the earth. The seventh seal is opened with profound stillness: "When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour" (Rev 8:1). This pause — unique in the midst of cosmic drama — signifies awe, anticipation, and perhaps the gravity of what is about to unfold as God prepares the next phase of judgment. Then seven angels receive seven trumpets. An angel with a golden censer offers incense with the prayers of the saints on the golden altar before the throne, then fills the censer with fire from the altar and hurls it to the earth — producing peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. The first four trumpets sound in rapid succession: First trumpet: Hail and fire mixed with blood are hurled to the earth — a third of the earth, trees, and green grass are burned up. Second trumpet: Something like a great burning mountain is thrown into the sea — a third of the sea becomes blood, a third of sea creatures die, and a third of ships are destroyed. Third trumpet: A great star called Wormwood falls from heaven, burning like a torch, poisoning a third of the rivers and springs — many people die from the bitter waters. Fourth trumpet: A third of the sun, moon, and stars are struck, darkening a third of the day and night. These judgments echo the plagues of Egypt and partial destruction (affecting only a third) — showing God's mercy even in wrath, restraining total devastation while calling the world to repentance. A threefold "Woe" is announced as the final three trumpets approach. This section reveals God's sovereignty over creation and history: judgment is real, yet tempered; prayer is powerful; and the heavens themselves respond to the cries of the saints.
