THEMES ANALYSIS IN MEJA MWANGI'S 'INCIDENT IN THE PARK' 1.) Challenges of urbanization (i) Indolence and unemployment The Parliament and city hall clocks regulate the tired city's pulse, reminding the park loungers just how many hours they had wasted lying idle, pleading with them to get up and be useful. (page 6) ~ The ice cream vendor is always hammering the bell and no one wants to buy the ice cream. (pg 9) ~ A group of men sit aimlessly watching the paddling boaters with undivided interest- kind of a mechanical lifestyle. (pg. 8) ~ The somewhat vague and/or misinformed a 'Waiting for Godot' type of dialogue between the heavy loafers and his partner. (pg 8-10) 2.) Noise Pollution Cars brayed on the highway, brakes shrieked, ambulances wailed, trains wailed. The onomatopoeiac words; brayed, shrieked, wailed and whistled imply the noise pollution that characterizes the city life. 3.) Traffic congestion The city is metaphorically likened to a dormant dragon growling with clogged up traffic. (pg 6) 4.) Overpopulation On the stroke of one, movement of people is metaphorically compared to a dam bursting, gushing with office workers from ministerial offices, armies of people move in tides and waves. (pg 7) 5. Environmental degradation Inasmuch as the drought has taken a heavy toll in the park, there seems to be implied the poor management of the park through the use of personification. ~ The city, in a desperate effort to keep itself beautiful (the city has the human attribute to take care of itself), had watered more delicate flowers planted like oasis islands. (pg 6) ~ The boat-house sits sadly hunched over the shoulder of the lake (pg 6) The personification highlights the neglect of the park by the authorities that there be. The fish pond is dangerously overgrown with weeds. The yellow, blue and purple water lilies struggled with the colourless mish-mash of pond weeds. Where the pond flowers had once stuck their buds out in thick colourful fingers and proclaimed order, there now was a riot of unclassifiable intruders, with bastard flowers (pg 8) ~ A hairy loafer wearing worn slippers ironically on a board inscribed with the words DO NOT FEED FISH- BY ORDER carelessly tosses debris, tiny bits of grass and soil at the hungry fish. He does this as a common place occurrence with no fear of chastisement. (pg 8) 2. CONFLICT ~ Between the authorities (the constables) and the street hawkers (the fruit seller) (pg 11) ~ The judge vs the fruit seller (pg 11) ~ The fruit seller vs the other civilian city dwellers (pg 11-12) 3. CORRUPTION The subtle corrupt nature of the authorities shows in the implied bribery offers that the fruit seller makes to the constables. At first, he offers to give five shillings, then ten shillings and lastly one basket of fruits plus ten shillings. On the first instance, the constables look at the money in the old man's hand then looks at the shrugging other. On the second instance, the constable carrying the heavy fruit basket hesitates when the second offer is made. (pg 11). These two instances imply a subtle history of bribery between the street hawkers on the wrong and the constables. 4. MOB JUSTICE When it occurs to the fruit seller that the unforgiving constables aren't going to pardon him, he leaps and breaks away from the constables. A man, alerted by the constables' shouts, nabs him, (pg 11), another lunges for him (pg 12), he stumbles, falls into a ditch by the side of the highway, people come by, hurl stones at him and by the time the constables run up, the fruit-peddler lies like a broken and twisted rag doll at the bottom of the rock with thick red blood drawn over the sparsely bearded face (pg 12) Check out a video on the plot of Meja Mwangi's story 'Incident In the Park' • A SILENT SONG AND OTHER STORIES: MEJA MWAN...
