Harris Lecture - Keith Whittington: Intellectual Diversity Mandates and Freedom to Teach

Keith Whittington, David Boies Professor of Law at Yale Law School, presents “Intellectual Diversity Mandates and Freedom to Teach.” In this lecture, Keith Whittington, a noted constitutional scholar, will consider Senate Enrolled Act 202, a law passed by the Indiana General Assembly, and its potential impact on public higher education in Indiana. The law requires faculty to incorporate “intellectual diversity” into their teaching and other professional activities. It comes amid a broader variety of legislative efforts across the country to control higher education down to the level of what is taught in the classroom. The lecture will explore the potential consequences these laws have for the First Amendment rights of faculty members and for the academic freedom of faculty and universities. October 2, 2024
