And my mother and my father, they were my heroes. There was no work in Claremont & my father had to go away to try find work elsewhere… We were also raised by our older cousins, Imams Sep and Saliem Davids under the leadership of Imam Abdullah Haron.' The mother city of Cape Town is known for its beautiful and unique culture, history, and traditions, preserved by those before us. Meet 71-year-old Ismail Galant better known as ‘The Voice’, born in a vibrant area called Claremont, in Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA. The Nederlands Lied is a unique type of singing, it is the main item in the Cape Malay Annual Choral Competitions and can only be heard in Cape Town. Our Cape Malay ‘JAWWAP!’ crew was afforded the opportunity to sit down with a living legend, for an exclusive and detailed interview in which he ‘karienkils-it-up’ and recollects precious memories around his upbringing; and more importantly, the understanding and love for the Nederlands Lied, his 45+ years in Cape Malay Choirs, his thoughts of his beloved family and supporters; traveling experiences and shares classic stories about how things have changed with the times and more! ...'Out of that roads, came Springboks …Sa’ad Majied, Faiek Davids, Nazeem Smith. We were the batcha boys, myself & my brothers. I had a very good friend, up until today, Sheikh Ganief Moos. There was a place called the Empty Dome, it was like a field, then we come together there to play against the children from the Vinyard Road. There was no skollies, everybody was like family … people like Aunty Sarah, Aunty Shamina, Aunty Adaah …they were all mothers of the community & we respect them! Claremont was small but big in everything …Gadat …Cricketers, as if I can see it all now. To sit here, to reminisce is just fantastic! My brother Faried, had a fantastic Voice, Allahu Akbar. He was so good and we were jealous of him. Because when we go to batcha by the Kiefaaits, the people will give him more slaawats than us! My first Nederlands… Yoh, we went to this place called The City Hall …and there I won 1st prize …and the whole of Cape Town went mad! ‘Who’s this boy?’ ‘Who’s this now?’ I can still see Boeta Moosie Galant, Muneer, Mr Chong, ‘Kapilaan’, ‘Akkedissie’ …fantastic guys like Eeza Mohamed, Boeta Achmat, Abdullah Maged …My friend who’s still alive, we call him …his nickname is ‘Patatjie’, Maghdie, Yusuf ‘Kaas’. They were the ghoens of Violets & Primroses. There was also ‘Baakie’ …Ies-Moos, ‘Dol’, ‘Mooi’! Nederlands singing is different from everything in the whole world. It’s in a league of its own and tells a story about a time …like ‘Gaaf Maria’, like ‘Vriende kom luister’ …from the Netherlands. And the people that came here to the Cape, forced into slavery like Batavia… could relate to each other with the Nederlands songs, it gave them a strong link to home. You must make things with your voice that is called a ‘Karienkil’ You first do your stuff and then the pak takes on …for example, a boy talk to his girlfriend and then she give him the answer. The man that keep all this stuff together is the President, the late Shafiek April. Mag Allah gee vir hom die Jannah, InSha Allah, Ameen. He had to go through a lot of things for all these years but kept the Cape Malay Choir Board intact. Mr & Mrs April were true ambassadors! Long Live our Family Legacy! Long Live our Heritage! Long Live the Nederlands Lied! Ismail had a winning streak for several years, from the tender age of 16 & sang classic Nederlands songs such as ‘Vriende kom luister’, ‘Ag Rosa Lem’, ‘Oraal’ ‘Ewaglustig’ and many more. He was also a Soloist, Coach, Comic Singer and later an Adjudicator. ‘The Voice’ also mentions his ongoing treatment of Dialysis. ========================= Watch the FULL EPISODE HERE: • SKYLIMIT ProjMan TCM S1E8 Ismail The Voice...
