This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It all started with a 20 pound turkey that I won at a 5k running race in Wisconsin. Before this, I had been told most all of my life that I was not a good runner, I was too slow, had asthma and needless to say, did not make the track or cross country team in high school. I went home in tears with my tail between my legs and told my mother I was not good enough. Thousands of miles later, I have raised millions of dollars using my passion to run. Lisa Smith-Batchen is a world renowned elite ultra runner, ironman competitor and adventure racer. Lisa is a woman of many "firsts". She is the first American to win the Marathon des Sables stage-race through the Moroccan desert and has twice won the Badwater Ultramarathon, which is considered one of the toughest races in the world. She is also the first and only person to ever have run 50 miles a day in 50 states in the USA in 62 days and just this July became the first woman to run 584 miles through Death Valley in 14 days. Lisa is also a proven coach and motivator whose knowledge of health, fitness and nutrition has helped hundreds of individuals achieve their specific goals. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
