As America approaches its 250th anniversary, VIA Short Takes explores the local landmarks and stories that reflect the nation’s rich history. This episode visits St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania — a historic Gothic landmark that has stood at the heart of the community since the 1800s. Built in 1869 in the cruciform Gothic style, St. Mark’s Church reflects the architectural beauty and cultural legacy of Carbon County’s early days. Inside, visitors can find extraordinary historical treasures, including rare Tiffany stained glass windows, intricate religious artwork, and a remarkable altar wall modeled after St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle — created with assistance from artisans sent by Queen Victoria herself. The church’s connections to prominent figures like Asa Packer, its breathtaking cobalt, emerald, and gold-infused glass, and its enduring role in the Jim Thorpe community make St. Mark’s one of Pennsylvania’s most fascinating historic landmarks. More than a century later, the church remains both a place of worship and a living symbol of the town’s heritage.
