This work is a fantasy of being able to be as quick and nimble as the beautiful Hummingbirds who visit our feeder and Pomegranate tree. Hummingbirds are one of my favorite subjects because their colors are "structural" like my Polage art. In other words, they are not chemical; the colors come from bending and interference of light waves like in a prism. This is the purest kind of color and it is one reason Polage® art has such a distinctive pallet, as do hummingbird feathers. This piece is one of the first works created with a new technology and first shown in a retrospective at the Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences in Peoria, IL in 2009. The image changes, not with a motor, but with electronic signals to a special liquid crystal panel specially made for this purpose. The piece can be hung just like a framed painting. The artist can set various speeds and pauses according to the individual work and desired of the collector. Austine's Polage® art (polarized light art) is created with materials having no colors. We perceive the color as a result of the interaction of polarized light and certain optically active materials such as cellophane. The image is created by cutting and laminating thousands of tiny pieces of this colorless material to polarizing filter. This work is presented here in a special light box incorporating a motor and rotating polarizing filter which gives the work it color and causes it to continually change. The art may also be viewed as an interactive work which is mostly "invisible" until viewed through a polarizing filter. Austine has been developing this art form for over 40 years.
