What is the Bengal Glacial Coastal Shelf (BGCS)? Recent genetic, archaeological, and linguistic evidence suggests that the now-submerged BGCS may have been a key cradle of human evolution. Anatomically Modern Humans (AMHs) likely arrived in the Indian subcontinent via a southern coastal route from Africa and settled in the BGCS, where isolation over thousands of years may have led to the emergence of haplogroups O, R1b, and R1a. Haplogroup O spread east into Southeast Asia; R1b moved west toward West Asia and Europe, with evidence suggesting the Indian variant is older; and R1a, linked to Indo-Aryan speakers, expanded later into Central Asia and beyond. This model also accounts for early human presence in the Andaman Islands via land bridges and proposes that haplogroups J1 and J2 may have evolved from O, with pre-R1a/R1b populations possibly occupying regions south of the Vindhya range. Genetic distributions align closely with linguistic patterns—R1a/R1b with Indo-Aryan languages, O with Austroasiatic and Tibeto-Burman—indicating that South Asia was not just a passageway, but a central hub for early human development and dispersal. Dr Tilak Ranjan Bera (Books): https://amzn.to/3PTSg3m About The Speaker: Dr Bera explored the Indian subcontinent to collect evidence to establish the antiquity of Indian civilization. He introduced quite a few 'never-thought-of ideas' to arrange Indian history. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and went to Yale University. In the meantime, Dr Bera has explored Jordan, Israel, Turkey, and Greece to collect evidence available in the Mediterranean region, establishing an early connectivity of the region with Indian civilization.
