A Humpback Whale Washed Onto Assateague Island + Rackliffe House Visit

A 20 foot juvenile humpback whale washed ashore Assateague Island in Maryland! We went to check it out, but unfortunately couldn't get too close. Sort of glad we couldn't because the smell was horrible! The park service was there along with Maryland DNR and NOAA to get samples for a necropsy. After that they buried it somewhere in the dunes. Update: 1/19/23 Local news reported that, although not confirmed, they believe the cause of death may have been from a vessel strike. The news sighted an examination found a hemorrhage along the left side which may have been caused by a vessel strike and caused it's death. They are still going to do a necropsy and see if the strike happened before or after it's death. More from the National Park Service: A necropsy is planned for Tuesday, 1/17 by staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (Stranding Response Program) and the National Aquarium. At this time there are no obvious signs to the cause of death. NPS staff at Assateague Island National Seashore will use heavy equipment to move the whale to the upper part of the beach. After the necropsy is completed, it will be moved into the dunes and allowed to dry out prior to its eventual burial. All parts of the animal are protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.
