Pride started as a riot, and with June 1 around the corner, we thought wise to share important information about your right to protest. Here’s what our VP of Advocacy, Katie Blair (she/her) has to say: • Your rights are strongest in what are known as “traditional public forums”, such as streets, sidewalks, parks, and outside of government buildings. • When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, INCLUDING federal buildings and the police. • Police must treat protesters and counter-protesters EQUALLY. • If you feel that your rights have been violated, write down everything that you experienced and reach out to the agency the offender works for. Your city should also have a police complaint process, which you can find online. If you’re considering taking legal action, consider contacting your state ACLU affiliate, they will let you know if you have a case. While attending protests and demonstrations are great ways to fight for LGBTQ+ rights, they are not always the safest or most accessible options. Luckily, there are numerous ways to make your voice heard, and we have the resources to make it easy. Visit pflag.org/JoinTheFight to learn more.
