This class explains that 1 Peter was written to early Christians facing suspicion and hostility, urging them to live with a future-focused hope grounded in Christ rather than being rooted in the present world. Peter frames believers as sojourners and exiles whose honorable conduct among non-believers serves as the primary defense and witness of Christianity. By consistently doing good—personally, socially, and civically—Christians silence ignorance, glorify God, and demonstrate the transforming power of faith even under unjust governments. 5 Main Teaching Points Christians are sojourners, not settlers – Believers are “just passing through” this life, and their ethics, priorities, and endurance are shaped by hope in a heavenly homeland rather than attachment to earthly stability. Conduct is central to Christian witness – Repeated emphasis in 1 Peter shows that daily behavior, integrity, kindness, and good deeds are the strongest apologetic for Christianity. Doing good disarms hostility and misunderstanding – When Christians live honorably, accusations lose credibility and observers are drawn to glorify God or inquire about faith. Submission to government is part of godly conduct – Even under corrupt or oppressive rulers, Christians are called to obey laws, be good citizens, and pursue peace - unless directly commanded to disobey God. The mission of Christians is spiritual, not political – Scripture presents transformation as occurring one soul at a time through faithful living, not through rebellion, coercion, or legislating morality.
