How do WASH interventions shape human welfare? How can we most effectively design WASH interventions? How does human behaviour shape the impact and sustainability of WASH interventions? How can WASH resources be managed to achieve food and water security under climate change? Tools for causal inference from economics, including randomized field experiments, as well as interdisciplinary approaches can shed new light on these old questions. This session summarizes series of papers published in special issues with support from the ADBI and the BMGF. One special issue focuses on ‘Sanitation and Development’, published in the prestigious Journal of Development Economics, the leading journal in development economics, the other focuses on ‘Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Technologies and Governance in Urban Development', published in the Environment and Planning B, an interdisciplinary journal. Contributing authors will discuss their findings, and the co-editors will review and synthesize lessons for governments and non-governmental actors seeking to improve WASH provision, before closing with an open discussion round. The session will illustrate how drawing together lessons from communities confronting the same challenges in different contexts worldwide reveals commonalities of experience and opportunities that transcend borders
