On request of Maldives foreign minister, India took a swift action to thwart the attempt of a coup by the rebels against President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The attempted coup was carried out by Abdullah Luthufi with the support of 80 people. One group attacked at Radio and Telecommunications centre while the other tried to take over the Presidential Palace of Maldives.
