I stood frozen at the head table in my custom Vera Wang gown the heavy silk suddenly feeling like a straightjacket. Two hundred and eighty guests members of the city elite corporate partners and lifelong friends sat in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. The crystal chandeliers cast a warm golden glow over the imported orchids but my blood ran ice cold. My eyes were locked on two empty mahogany chairs placed front and center. Engraved into the polished wood were the titles Father of the Bride and Mother of the Bride. The string quartet had just finished playing our entrance music and the applause was dying down replaced by a suffocating confused silence. People were murmuring craning their necks to see why the bride looked like she had seen a ghost. They expected a joyful toast from the man who raised me. Instead I was staring at a gaping hole where my family should have been. My hands shook as my phone buzzed in my bridal clutch. A single message glowed on the screen that would turn this million dollar celebration into a battlefield and break the chains of thirty five years of deep emotional abuse forever.
