More than 200 million people migrate from one country to another every year. Nearly half are women who might experience pregnancy, birth and motherhood in new countries, such as Canada. This video illustrates some of the challenges a refugee woman from Northeast Africa (named Sara) is facing during her first pregnancy in Canada. Sara had her first two children in Africa where she was surrounded by family and friends. The contrast between "back home" and "Canada" is clear in many situations in Sara's life. Sara's character is fictional but her experiences are based on the experiences of ~80 Northeast African women who participated in the ENRICH Research Program in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - http://enrich.ales.ualberta.ca/. For more information on the research that led to the development of this video, please refer to the following articles: 1) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... 2) http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/1... We would like to acknowledge the women who inspired this video, the health brokers from the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative in Edmonton, and our funders (Alberta Innovates, Women and Children Health Research Institute, Community-University Partnership, Vanier Graduate Scholarships). This video was produced by the Centre for Health and Nutrition (CHaN) at the University of Alberta, Canada.
