In this month’s Council Report, I recap key actions and initiatives from the Alexandria City Council in February. Council affirmed the emergency declaration for the January snowstorm, advanced a National Endowment for the Humanities grant application for local arts programming, approved street renamings, and awarded a $450,000 Housing Trust Fund grant to Wesley Housing to support affordable units in Potomac Yard. We also adopted updates to implement the City’s green building policy, approved rules for public EV charging stations in city rights-of-way, and began the process to issue an RFP for the Torpedo Factory Arts Center. Council also accepted a $170,000 grant to establish an Office of Financial Empowerment and reviewed 2026 property assessments, which show taxable property increasing by 3.41%. February also included community milestones—from Family Self-Sufficiency graduates to welcoming 17 new Fire Department recruits—and the release of the proposed FY27 budget.
