On this day, Argentinian boxing legend Carlos Monzón aka “Escopeta” fights reigning WBA & WBC World Welterweight Champion José “Mantequilla” Nápoles in Puteaux, France. This fight was promoted by the great French actor Alain Delon, renown for films such as Le Samouraï and Purple Noon. This was Monzón’s 8th defense of his WBA, WBC, The Ring & Lineal Middleweight Titles. Nápoles moved up from Welterweight to challenge Monzon and at this time was in his 2nd reign as World Welterweight Champion. The naturally bigger Monzon had 4” height, 5" reach & 6 pound weight advantages over Mantequilla. In April 1969, Nápoles beat Curtis Cokes via RTD9 to win the WBA & WBC titles and made 3 successful defense of both straps before losing it to Billy Backus via TKO4 in December 1970. However, Nápoles regained both titles in a rematch; winning via TKO8 in Jun 1971 to begin his 2nd reign as World Welterweight Champion. He made 7 successful defenses of both titles before moving up to face the Argentinian legend. Should Nápoles won, he would become the 7th Welterweight in history to successfully challenged for the World Middleweight Championship. The previous 6 were; 1) Tommy Ryan (1898) 2) Lou Brouillard (1911) 3) Mickey Walker (1926) 4) Sugar Ray Robinson (1951) 5) Carmen Basilio (1957) 6) Emile Griffith (1966) In November 1970, Monzón beat Nino Benvenuti via TKO12 to win the WBA, WBC, The Ring & Lineal Middleweight Titles; a victory named Fight of the Year by Ring Magazine. Monzon proceeded to make 7 successful defenses of his titles. At the time of this fight, Monzón had not been defeated for nearly 10 years (from October 1963 to September 1973) with an impressive record of 65(46)-0-9 during that period. Nápoles on the other hand, had a 12 win streak which includes 7 successful defenses of his WBA & WBC Welterweight Titles. Going into the fight, Monzón had wins over top oppositions in Fraser Scott, Tom Bethea, Tom Bogs, Denny Moyer, Bennie Briscoe, Jean Claude Bouttier (2x), Nino Benvenuti (2x), Emile Griffith (2x). Nápoles on the other hand had meaningful victories over notable opponents such as Angel Robinson Garcia, Jean Josselin, Carlos Hernandez, Manuel Gonzalez, Clyde Gray, Billy Backus, Emile Griffith, Hedgemon Lewis, Adolph Pruitt (2x), Eddie Perkins (2x), Ernie Lopez (2x), Curtis Cokes (2x). From the opening bell, the naturally bigger Monzón utilized his long jab and pinpoint right hands to dominate Nápoles and after 6 rounds of a one sided affair Nápoles failed to answer the bell for the 7th round; the 1st time Nápoles was stopped in 82 bouts. While he lost to Billy Backus via TKO4 in 1970, the stoppage was due to cuts. Enjoy this highlights of Monzón’s dominant performance over Jose Nápoles and be sure to SUBSCRIBE!
