Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner last year reassigned ownership of the building, in the capital Buenos Aires, to human rights organisations in remembrance of the thousands who were tortured and killed there between 1976 and 1982. The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo is an association of Argentine mothers and grandmothers whose children "disappeared" under the dictatorship. Their name comes from a square in central Buenos Aires where the bereaved women first gathered, and where they still gather every Thursday afternoon for a walk round the square. The official takeover of ESMA from the Navy took place in 2007, but the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo decided to have their own ceremony on Thursday which included painting the walls of the former school with colourful flowers. "This has to be turned into a beautiful place, so that we bring life where there has been death. Long live our disappeared sons," the Mothers' leader Hebe de Bonafini said. Dozens of people joined the mothers for the event. The mothers decided to re-name ESMA "Our Sons." Prosecutors estimate as many as 5,000 dissidents passed through ESMA, where they were jailed, tortured or "disappeared" under the dictatorship. Its red brick buildings and manicured lawns were recently vacated by the last military personnel. Since taking office in 2003, Kirchner has successfully lobbied the Supreme Court to overturn amnesty laws from the 1980s that partly protected scores of former state security agents. It has led to a handful of convictions, including two police agents and a Roman Catholic priest accused of colluding with torturers. Nearly 13,000 people are officially listed as dead or missing from the junta's so-called Dirty War against dissent, though human rights groups put the toll at nearly 30,000 victims.
