Here’s another installment of my “What a Character!” series where I introduce traditional Chinese characters in alphabetical order according to the Hanyu Pinyin spelling (romanization). Today’s video is about “Ce” with all five characters in the fourth tone. I also add a second tone “Ceng” to this video, as there is only one common character in this sound form in the official Ministry of Education list. 00:00- 00:30 Intro The “ce(4)” meanings are as follows: 00:31-01:27 冊 "booklet, volume, album." To me, it does look like three books on a shelf with a horizontal line through them. The radical is "jiong," an enclosure. 01:28- 02:12 策 "plan." It has the "bamboo" radical on the top. "Jiong" superimposed on "mu(4)," the wood/tree component. It is in the first 1000 characters you should know in Chinese. The simplified is the same. 02:13- 04:05 側 "side." "ren" (person) to the left. The "shellfish/ money" radical in the middle, and the inverted "knife" radical on the side. Without the "ren," it is the character pronounced "ze(2)" as in a "rule." I remember it with a personal story about my mother...A person, paying lots of money to "go under the knife" lying on their "side" for the entire procedure. Use my story or make your own! 04:06- 05:18 測 "measure or test." It features the "water" three strokes as a radical instead of "ren." Sailors used to measure their speed with knots on a rope, reminding me to use the "water" radical. 05:19- 06:45 廁 "toilet." A shelter over the "ze(2)" component. I can't believe the frequency number is so high (2227)! It is on signs literally everywhere, but perhaps people don't use it in print media as much! This makes me wonder how the 3000 list would be categorized if it were compiled with spoken expressions rather than from print. 06:45- 07:34. I asked AI to come up with one sentence using the above characters. 07:35- 09:15 層 “ceng(2)” means "floor, level, or layer" features the "shr(1)" or "corpse" radical over "zeng." 09:16- 09:55 See how many of characters you know that start with "a" in Pinyin. 09:56- 10:22 See how many characters you know that start with "b" in Pinyin. 10:48-11:54 Skinny's Cafe and "goodbye" Please leave a "like," a comment and subscribe for more videos introducing traditional Chinese characters as well as adventures in Taiwan!
