This is really very basic information and to get into more details I'd need to do a long-form podcast or something similar. So while this is very broad strokes, I hope it is helpful. I've done a lot of reading in Japanese and spoken to some bear researchers that I met. There are plenty of articles in Japanese you can find by bear researchers and others with experience meeting bears thousands of times (seriously!), and I have read many of these so I'm not just pulling this out of my nose. Of course for some details there are conflicting ideas, so I just do the best that I can with the information that I am able to gather and from the advice of more experienced guides that I know.
