In this video, we narrate the adventure of Alexander Selkirk, one of the most famous castaways in history. In 1704, he was marooned on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, then known as Más a Tierra and part of the Juan Fernández archipelago. Selkirk remained there in complete solitude for four years and four months, from October 1704 to February 2, 1709, during which he managed to survive by eating vegetables and wild goats. He was rescued in 1709 by an English ship and, after a brief stay in the United Kingdom, set sail again, meeting his demise in 1723. Selkirk's story was one of the inspirations for Daniel Defoe in creating the character of Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk's fame has endured, and in the 1960s, the Chilean government even named an island after him. 00:00 The Corsair Selkirk 00:50 What happened in September 1704? 01:42 Who was Alexander Selkirk? 03:03 Más a Tierra: becoming a castaway 04:26 How did he manage to survive? 06:11 Rescue and return 07:44 Selkirk inspired the character of Robinson Crusoe #selkirk #robinsoncrusoe #geopop
