another of my bottom of the bill group's that we see on posters of the day but have never heard or seen.....they started off us a duo of ian bruce douglas/skip tull recording demo's as 'the underground cinema' at the 'aaa studio's' in dorchester boston 1967.three tracks recorded and collected together on a c.d.released in '96 'unreleased new england teen scene' if you wanna check them out....douglas then put together 'ultimate spinach' later that year with a line-up of : barbara hudson/ian bruce douglas/geoff winthrop/richard nese & keith lahteinen.playing all the local clubs they caught the eye at the 'unicorn club' in boston and signed a management deal with a new company just set up and went into the studios late '67 (26th september in fact...) to record what was to become their debut album under the watchful eye of producer alan lorber more of which later....the result was for me a patchy but promising debut with this track 'ballad of a hipdeath goddess' a stand out...one nice rip off was an almost note perfect masked marauder by country joe titled 'baroque #1 but over all a pretty cool album....this track has it all... spoken word intro then icy cold vocals from hudson then into a lengthy instrumental break with fuzzy guitars/masses of feedback and spacy keyboards complete with theremin to add even more atmosphere...producer/arranger alan lorber was a dour straight laced man who always wore a suit and tie with no idea of what he was doing...he tried to create a 'bosstown sound' that would rival san francisco but it back fired almost immediately with negative press country wide...many fine groups were caught up in the bad press including spinach/orpheus/listening/ill wind/beacon street union and one of my faves eden's children etc..most of the lorber releases were on 'MGM records' but the productions were thin sounding and not mixed very well....to promote the album they were sent out on tour and their first gig was at the fillmore on january 18th '68 ( & further shows a week or two later) with new equipment in tow by ampeg & where a curt bill graham told them they were the worst band to play there!!! douglas the leader of the band agreed with graham and future shows on tour were much improved...shortly after the album's release drummer lahteinen quit to be replaced by russ levine and another female singer brought in to boost the sound priscilla didonato...part of the tour saw them play the pat boone t.v.show and i'd love to see that clip!..a second album was recorded as well in '68 that a saw didonato replaced by caryl lee....'behold and see' that album was a much better album than the first with some fine songs....here came along yet another line-up change with bassist nese replaced by mike levine and winthrop by jimmy thompson who inturn for the third album replaced by jeff'skunk'baxter guitar...by the third album douglas had left the band fed up with no control over a band he formed and nutured and had also written practically all the music for...he would later form a power trio 'ian bruce douglas apocalypse'....i must mention that i do have alive recording of the band from july '67 at the unicorn where the band in its early stages plays a mix of folk-rock/pop and psych including a run through of hipdeath goddess & if you must its on c.d.and released on keyhole records....a sad ending but one we have all heard before....p.s.lava lamp & incense optional....
