Most travelers pass through Trat, Thailand on their way to Koh Chang or the Cambodian border, but is it worth stopping for a couple of nights? In this video, I explore this non-touristy Thai town, taking you through local markets, temples, and quiet streets that offer a break from Thailand’s usual chaotic hotspots. Trat has an interesting history—once under French control before Thailand got it back. There are still signs of this past, and I find a rare historical landmark linked to the French occupation. I also stumble upon a beautiful Buddhist temple, a vibrant Chinese temple, and a peaceful moat that adds to the town’s charm. One of the biggest surprises? The laid-back vibe. After the madness of Bangkok and Pattaya, this was the perfect place to slow down. The local market was packed, the guesthouse was one of the cheapest and quirkiest I’ve stayed in, and the locals were welcoming. Join me as I wander through a town that rarely makes it onto travel itineraries but might just be worth your time! I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
