When a designer says they are doing branding or brand strategy for a business, I always want to see what they mean. I had a huge confusion at first and confused brand identity with branding strategy and realized that branding encompassed much more than just a brand identity. There is the strategic thinking part, meaning strategy of how a brand will act in relation to their target audience, how they will be perceived, who their target audience is and strategizing how to connect with them. Brand Strategy is what creates not just the outward visual appearance of a company, but also the internal brand, who they are, what they stand for, who they want to target, what their message is and what their personality is. The brand identity is just that: the way it looks visually. But behind that outward-facing appearance, there is a whole underlying personality and that is part of the strategic plan or brand strategy to attract the right type of clients and grow their business.
