Mansi (obsolete - Voguls), an indigenous small people of the Khanty-Mansi National Okrug of the Tyumen Region. A closely related people are the Khanty Mansi The language belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of the Uralic language family. As a people, the Mansi were formed as a result of the merger of the Uralic and Ugric tribes moving from the south through the steppes and forest-steppes of Western Siberia and Northern Kazakhstan. The combination of the cultures of taiga hunters and fishermen and steppe nomadic cattle breeders in the culture of the people is preserved to this day. Initially, the Mansi lived in the Urals and its western slopes, but with the appearance of the Komi and Russians in those places in the 11th-14th centuries, they moved to the Trans-Urals. The earliest contacts with Russians, primarily with Novgorodians, date back to the 11th century. With the annexation of Siberia to the Russian state at the end of the 16th century, Russian colonization intensified, and by the end of the 17th century the number of Russians exceeded the number of the indigenous population. The Mansi gradually moved to the north and east, partially assimilated, and were formally converted to Christianity in the 18th century.
