Matthew 16:13 – 17 Have you ever known someone who is always asking questions? Sometimes we find it can be a bit annoying, especially if we are looking to get on and do other things. Little children often ask lots of questions. To begin with they seem to ask ‘why?’ a lot, but it soon develops from there. Of course, asking questions is really important, it is how we learn, and it is how we grow. It is important to learn to ask ‘good’ questions, meaningful questions, and no doubt the best questions we can ask are about God and about faith. Do you know, if you ever have a question about God, I’d love you to feel that you could ask me. I can’t promise that I will know the answer, at least not straight away, but I love listening to questions and talking about God – because more than anything else I’m happy when I see people growing in knowledge of Jesus and in relationship with Him. One question that I sometimes get asked is this one, “who made God?” It is a good question, and not always an easy one to get our head around. Someone once answered the question this way. They took their wedding ring off their finger, gave it to the person asking the question and said: “Tell me where this ring starts and where it finishes?” Of course the person looked back and said: “I can’t, because it has no beginning and no end.” And that is the same with God. God is Eternal, which means He was never made, and He will never be gone. Another really important question to ask, and to think about is: “Who is Jesus?” In fact it is one of the most important and helpful questions we can get our minds around. It was so important, in fact, Jesus once asked the disciples this very question – and I believe if He was here with us, He would probably carefully and lovingly go around each one of us and ask us this very question: “Who do you say that I am?” He would want us to answer truthfully – and I am certain He would know if we were lying. But He would patiently and lovingly wait for us to give Him an honest answer, and that answer would be very meaningful for Him, just the same as it was when He asked His disciples 2,000 years ago.
