Gand Rapids wins 9 to 0- Section Quarter Finals vs Cambridge-Isanti-Feb 18th 2025-shots on goal 49 to 9-Play Andover next at Amsoil Arena in Duluth Minnesota on way to State Tournament. Yanmar Arena Grand Rapids Minnesota. Section 7AA Quarterfinals Grand Rapids 9, Cambridge/Isanti 0 GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids sent Cambridge/Isanti home empty-handed in a 9-0 win for the Thunderhawks in their section quarterfinal matchup. The Bluejackets played hard until the end, but this was all Thunderhawks from the beginning. Luke Palecek put Grand Rapids up 1-0 at 1:52 into the first period and the team maintained their lead through the end. Jameson Duell scored twice in the first period including a power play goal with less than 15 seconds remaining at the end of the first period. Ryan Bymark also scored in the first with an assist from Dylan Clayton. Caleb Gunderson, Luka Rohloff (2) and Ander Rajala all picked up helpers in a 4-0 first period in which they outshot their opponent 21-1. Ander Rajala scored three minutes into the second period to make it 5-0. It was the first of two goals in the game for Rajala after missing a game. He was assisted by Rohloff, who had two assists in the period and four in the game as the senior orchestrated plenty of offense from the back end. Nathan Garski would add to the lead at 6:55 in the second period, making it 6-0 before Duell completed a hat trick late in the second, assisted by Stupar. Grand Rapids would capitalize on two power plays in the third period to bring it 9-0, with Rajala and Palecek’s second goals in the game each. Garski, Seth Carlson (2) and Bymark all recorded assists in the two goals. The Thunderhawks held a 49-9 shot advantage in the game, with six of them coming in the third period after head coach Grant Clafton gave senior captain Ryder Miskovich the final frame after starter Carter Casey saw three shots in two periods. Following the game, Clafton was asked how the team manages to stick to the game plan and stay within their structure when the Bluejackets struggled to keep up with Grand Rapids. “I think it's focus,” Clafton said. “I think the kids had their focus going tonight, and they know that this wasn't the one that we're trying to win here, and every game is preparation for the next. As soon as we got that in control, I think that there was a maturity level and focus to get going.” He says he liked the start and finish from the team. He thought they came out ready to play and finished strong as they advanced to the semifinal game. “I thought we had a lot of jump. I thought the kids came ready to play, and for the most part, I would say, 97% of the game we played the right way and kept our head. We didn't get tensed-up and played an honest game.” Grand Rapids’ strong start meant a mountain to climb for Cambridge/Isanti as time ticked away. Clafton says there is no taking your foot off the gas however, and definitely not in the postseason. “We don't dial it back. We keep the foot on the gas. It's just to make sure we're playing our style of hockey and doing things the right way.” Grand Rapids had ten players record points and seven record multiple in the start they wanted to the Section 7AA tournament. They’re next opponent will provide a challenge, but these Thunderhawks are coming in hot after a 9-0 win to open the tournament. Grand Rapids (2) faces (3) Andover in the Section 7AA Semifinal game this Saturday at 2 p.m., at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
