Saturated red is a signature of my photographic style. Many photographers, however, make the same common mistakes when hoping to achieve a similar vibrant color. Here are four tips for success with capturing red in your images! 1 - Use Savage Universal Primary Red Seamless. This background (when lit correctly) to achieve super saturated red hues. 2 - Don’t “over light” your red background. Many photographers will use direct light or bounced umbrellas to illuminate the red background. This typically leads to uneven or washed-out results. Instead, under light your background. If you want it brighter, add an indirect fill light to the scene. In this example we bounced a bare bulb into the wall/ceiling for overall fill light. 3 - Adjust the brightness and saturation of the reds in RAW processing. Go into your RAW processor of choice (ACR, CaptureOne, Lightroom) and find the area where you can adjust the HSL (hue, saturation, luminance) of each color. Target the reds, darken them, and increase saturation. This creates bold, rich reds. Darkening the reds helps you avoid that washed out look in favor of something richer and/or blood red. 4 - Adjust various reds to be the same hue. Reds exist on a range from orange red to magenta red. In a single frame you likely want most of your reds to be a similar hue. Make the appropriate adjustments so that the reds match closely. In this example we used an AI selection in RAW (AI masking in CaptureOne) to target the shit to make it less orange and cooler/magenta. Now my ‘secret’ to my signature saturated reds is secret no more! Lindsay Adler is a fashion and beauty photographer, educator, and author based in New York City.
