Killowen Poitín Review

This Poitín might have been made by a wizard! Ok, he's not really a wizard, but he does know his way around a distillery, which is kind of like being a wizard if you ask me. This is the Killowen Poitin and it is one amazing drink. Poitín is a uniquely Irish spirit and it occupies a unique place in the world of spirits, lighter than whiskey, cleaner than gin and more flavourful than vodka, it's a spirit that is as easy to sip as it is to mix in a cocktail. For a long time, poitín was illegal, or it was compared to moonshine, leading to it often being called "Irish Moonshine", but it is a very dinstinct spirit and absolutely worth a try. Taking a complex and rich mashbill and double distilling it to make their poitin, Killowen have made a really fresh, full flavoured and floral spirit that is not harsh or hard to drink. Killowen will also be releasing their own whiskey later this year, and if the poitín is anything to go by, it'll be some amazing stuff! Killowen Poitín Tasting notes: Nose: Fresh, earthy, grassy and sweet. Quite light flavours, but not lacking in delivery, think lemon zest, green apple, cracked peppercorns, bread dough and grain sweetness reminiscent of a lemon drizzle cake Palate: Really creamy and rich on the palate, with some chilli spice sitting on top of a dense, sweet base of grain and floral sweetness, as well as a touch of orange zest Finish: The finish is clean and warming, with a bit of lingering pepper and a hint of espresso at the very end ------------------------------------------------------- I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey.
