Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 ("Jupiter") Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York Bruno Walter, conductor Recorded on January 23, 1945, in Carnegie Hall, New York City, on Columbia 78-rpm matrices XCO 34181 through XCO 34187. Issued later the same year as Columbia Masterworks Set M-565 (records 12070-D through 12073-D), and in automatic sequence as Set MM-565 (records 12074-D through 12077). The symphony takes seven sides; the filler is the Overture to Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte" (K. 588), which has been uploaded separately. The Mozart "Jupiter" Symphony is in four movements: 1. Allegro vivace 2. Andante cantabile (at 8:08) 3. Menuetto: Allegretto (at 16:03) 4. Finale: Allegro molto (at 20:35) This is the second of four recordings that Bruno Walter made of this symphony; the others were in 1938 (with the Vienna Philharmonic), 1956 (with the New York Philharmonic again) and 1960 (with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, in stereo).
