26th of November 1812: The Battle of Berezina begins, seeing three days of fighting after which a Franco-Polish force was able to push through a larger Russian force and cross the Berezina with horrendous casualties. This is a Swiss song that was created in 1792, when Friedrich Wilke wrote music for Karl Ludwig Giesecke's poem "Die Nachtreise" (The Night Journey) to be sung to. It was originally called "Unser Leben gleicht der Reise" (Our Life is like a Journey), but it became more commonly known as "Beresinalied" after Napoleon's Swiss troops sung it at the Battle of Berezina in Russia in 1812. Oberleutnant Thomas Legler, a Swiss soldier in Oudinot's II Corps was reminded of the song by his commander and then asked to sing it. The rest of the Swiss troops joined in and sang as they attacked the Russians. At the start of the campaign, there were 8000 Swiss soldiers in 4 regiments under Napoleon's command, but only 1300 remained when the retreating Grande Armée met the Russians at the Berezina. The Swiss met the Russians on the 28th of November, on the road towards Borisov. At the end of the day, only 300 Swiss remained. They had fought with incredible bravery, but suffered horrendous casualties. Audio from • Beresinalied Picture from http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/inf...
