The artist is often her own worst critic. But ultimately, the art speaks for itself. Backstory: I had been making movies for about a year and I still had a lot to learn. Which, as it happens, I recognized. One of my issues was that my approach to storytelling had been strongly shaped by theater. And theater is a talky medium. Unlike film, which is more visual. So I decided that it would be a good learning experience if I made a movie without any dialogue at all. It would force me to use only visual storytelling techniques. "The Critic" was the result. Of course, soon after I started work on "The Critic," we drew Silent Film as genre in the 48 Hour Film Project. So I ended up making two silent movies that summer. Which, all in all, was probably a good thing. It's still one of my major pieces of advice for any beginning filmmaker. Make a silent film. Force yourself to tell a story visually. The experience will make you a better filmmaker. Afternote: The title sequence for this was also my first foray into VFX. Little did I know how deep I'd go down that rabbit hole.
