I have had a place in my heart for Burt Rutan's Variviggen since I seen Burt fly his proof of concept version to Oshkosh over 35 years ago. I owned one as a project, and got to fly the back seat of Ron & Pam Smith's in Indiana many years ago. But when I saw pictures of this one I couldn't believe it. Hardly anyone has seen this one. There are no articles in Kitplanes or Sport Aviation. I don't even know where the plane is or in what condition it is. We have heard stories about a hard landing and restoration, then another hard landing. But there are no stories to confirm this. the Viggen was designed to be made of wood! This is one of the hardest homebuilt airplanes to build. It is very complicated and there are no kits available. It was a plans built airplane. Most of the builders have spent a good share of their lives building one of these. One I know spent 13 years! But this one is even more unbelievable! The builder engineered it to be an all metal plane! It's made of aluminum! It boggles the mind to think of what it took to create this from a set of plans designed for wood! And to top that, place a Wankel Rotary engine on the back! So this is my homage to an incredible homebuilder who ever he is following his dreams and building one of the most beautiful and complex experimental aircraft in the world. What I wouldn't give to meet this man! Does anyone else have any information at all about this plane, building pictures, location, history, condition? Please post your comments below. Thanks.
