Abandoned South Fremantle Power Station

The South Fremantle Power Station opened in June 1951 as a old and coal fired power station. Built of Art Deco industrial design, closed in 1985 and is now disused and listed on the Western Australian State Register of Heritage Places. Located in North Coogee, the site to build the station on was chosen due to the access to an existing railway line for coal deliveries, access to sea water for cooling purposes and proximity to the grater population. Most of the equipment for the power station was sourced from the United Kingdom and took six years to complete. Since its closure, the derelict industrial building has achieved an iconic status and has extensive graffiti throughout. Now derelict, with all windows having been destroyed, mainly through vandalism. With the concrete and steel of the structure now deteriorating through the ingress of water. Hopefully the site and building will be redeveloped and utilised once again as it sits on prime beach front land.
