How To Make Mud Pizza Oven | Primitive Technology Mud Oven for Pizza | Primitive Style Pizza Oven Here are the basic steps to follow: Materials you will need: Sand Clay Straw or sawdust Firebricks Metal sheet or tarp Water Instructions: Choose a location for your mud oven for pizza. It should be a flat, level surface with good drainage, and away from any combustible materials or structures. Build a foundation for your clay oven for pizza. You can use bricks, concrete blocks, or a wooden frame filled with gravel or stones. The foundation should be at least 3-4 inches thick and level. Build a base for your oven. You can use a mix of sand, clay, and straw or sawdust to make a sturdy, heat-resistant base. Spread the mixture evenly over the foundation, and compact it down using a tamper or your feet. Build the dome of your mud pizza oven. Mix sand, clay, straw, or sawdust together until you have a thick, pliable mixture. Use this mixture to form the dome of your oven. You can either build the dome directly on the base or build it on a separate form made from sand. Let the dome dry for at least 24 hours. Then, carefully remove the sand form (if you used one) and any excess material from the inside of the dome. Build a doorway in front of your oven. Use firebricks to create a rectangular opening that is large enough to fit your pizzas. Build a mud oven chimney on the top of the dome. Use a metal sheet or tarp to form a tube that extends out of the top of the dome. Make sure the chimney is tall enough to allow smoke and heat to escape without being a fire hazard. Let the clay pizza oven dry completely for at least 7-10 days before firing it up. During this time, keep the oven covered with a tarp or other protective covering to keep it dry. When you're ready to use your oven, start a fire inside using small sticks or kindling. Gradually add larger pieces of wood until the fire is hot and the oven is heated to the desired temperature. Once the oven is hot enough, slide your pizzas into the oven using a peel. Cook them until the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remember to always use caution when working with fire and hot surfaces, and never leave your oven unattended.
