Strange idea, I first thought, when the Radio Télévision Suisse Espace 2, co-producer of the CD, somewhat strongly suggested it. The original idea was to record the Russian composer’s First, Great, Famous Concerto. The choice was mine, and this one seemed obvious; having been brought up with Russian music, I had always been particularly moved by Tchaikovsky. So, I set out to find a decent version of the Second Concerto in order to get better acquainted with its form – not such an easy task, as recordings are scarce due to its fall into oblivion. As an 18 year old, I had only heard of it. I started by looking for it in my usual CD stores and eventually found it after four or five shops. I listened, and listened again… The sound on that recording was not very convincing, and the tempi so slow that the work seemed to suffer from it. However, by-passing the first, often misleading impressions, emphasized by the negative bias that is too often linked with little or lesser known works, I ordered several other versions of which one, Emil Gilels’, totally persuaded me that this was indeed a profoundly significant masterpiece. It took many listening sessions, much historical research and score analysis for me to get a clear picture of this ill appreciated work. Thus, I learned that the lack of popularity of this Second Concerto was due to a series of untimely circumstances. To start with, the work, composed between 1879 and 1880, could not be first-performed by its dedicatee Nikolaï Rubinstein, who died suddenly in March 1881. It was however first-performed in November of the same year in New York by pianist Madeleine Schiller and conductor Theodore Thomas, and six months later in Moscow by the pupil of the composer, Sergei Taneyev, on the piano, and his friend Anton Rubinstein, brother of the deceased dedicatee, conducting.
