The most spectacular bus ride I've done! | MD-72-37 | Volvo B10M/UTIC | Rodoeste

Having been interested in, and regularly travelling, on buses in all sorts of places for nearly two decades (scary!!), I can honestly say I've never had an experience like this before. It's a warm, March, Monday evening at the Rodoeste Bus Station in Funchal. There is a choice of at least a dozen Volvo B10Ms present, all awaiting departure time on the PM peak run out between 16:30-17:30. One example stands out as looking particularly tidy, yet ancient - and that is none other than UTIC bodied Volvo B10M MD-72-37, which is of 1981 vintage. We board and ask for a fare to the terminus, which on route 27, is Caldeira. We'll worry about how to get back from wherever this place is, later. The route took us out of Funchal towards the west of the island, through Camara de Lobos, where the Rodoeste network begins to split off and become remote. The skilled, tidy and most polite driver expertly pilots this tidy, fully loaded, 42 year old Volvo up into the mountains, where, just when you think it can't get any steeper - it does. The views, sounds and experience of this vehicle working on the front line in 2023, makes this by far the best bus journey I've ever made.
