In the nursery they will let seeds germinate grow it into lettuce seedlings. The seed is supplied in a pelleted form and placed in soil blocks. The soil blocks are then covered with a thin layer of sand to prevent the risk of them drying out. The seeds germinate within 48 hours and are then placed in a greenhouse. Propagating lettuce seedlings takes about 2 weeks in summer and 8 weeks in winter. In summer, a large proportion of the iceberg lettuce we use is grown by our own lettuce farm, Dutchgrowers. Dutchgrowers supplies iceberg lettuce of the very best quality to Van Gorp Greenfood. The soil is carefully prepared and fertilised before every new crop. The iceberg lettuce plants are planted semi-automatically. During cultivation, the plants are regularly watered and incidentally fertilised throughout the season. Weeds are mechanically controlled and the use of crop protection products is minimised. Outdoor crops take 5 to 9 weeks to reach maturity. Our own crop supervisors closely monitor the lettuce’s development throughout the entire season. The iceberg lettuce is harvested by self-propelled harvesters. Dutchgrowers is GLOBALGAP-certified. On top of that, the farm also conforms to various extra customer-specific requirements. The certificates guarantee efficient management of the entire cultivation and harvest process, with safe, reliable products and sustainable farming being the main priorities.
