In this quick video we're applying a scratch coat on a planter base made from XPS foam to prepare the planter for the carve coat. First thing is prepping the foam. I hit it with a wire brush, scratching horizontal (east to west) lines into the surface. This step gives the mud something to bite into so it doesn’t want to slide off as you work. Next, I apply scrim in key areas — in this case, up top and around the corners — just to lock everything in and give it some added strength. Then it's time for the mud. The biggest tip I can give here: keep your hand moving. If you stop or try to pat the mud on, you'll notice it starts to slip. Smooth, continuous movement helps keep the mud where you want it. Once the mud’s on, I go back over it and lightly scratch the surface with my fingers (again east to west). That gives the carve coat something to grab onto when we move into the next stage. Scratch Coat Mix Design: 1) Fine Play Sand: 1.5 bags (80lbs) 2) Portland Cement: 1 bag (47lbs) 3) Water: 2.5 - 3 gallons 4) 1/2" AR Glass Fiber: 2 quarts 5) CarVZ Vertical Carving Additive: 2.5 - 3 lbs Note: Every mix can be adjusted based on your conditions. Different sand types and moisture levels will influence the mix. If your sand is damp, you can back off the water a bit. Adjust aggregates and consistency based on your preference and working time.
