The 5 car trains are back, this time on the Richmond - Millbrae (Red line) and Richmond - Berryessa (Orange Line). Service on the Red line was initally cancelled for a few weeks due to a cable break and substation fire in the first week of March. 5/10/22 Update: 5 car trains are no more - the wiring has been fixed and the long 8 and 10 car trains are back. Now, instead of running only long (sometimes 10 car) Orange line trains on the Richmond line, BART runs 5 car Orange and Red line trains. This allows for more frequent service, but smaller trains. Last time I recall 5 car trains was up to late 2020 with the 5 car Green Line (and Red too IIRC) trains. BART was running longer trains (8 - 10 cars) all day from 2020 to the present to encourage "social distancing." These short trains certainly are...cozy. Not to mention it's now getting hard to find a clean seat on these short trains.
