Treatments depend on whether the cancer is confined to the chest or has spread to other parts of the body. Surgery is rarely used for patients with small cell lung cancer. If the small cell lung cancer occurs only in the chest, it’s called “limited stage” and treated with chemotherapy and radiation at the same time, and when those are completed, immunotherapy is recommended. If the cancer has spread outside the chest to other parts of the body, it’s called “extensive stage” and treated with chemotherapy and immunotherapy at the same time, and when those are completed, radiation therapy may be given to the head to lessen the risk that the cancer will spread to the brain. Unfortunately, after treatment, the cancer can come back or show up in other areas. In that setting, chemotherapy or a new type of immunotherapy called tarlatamab may be given.
