Federal officials were expected to release millions in funding for the Gateway Tunnel project by Thursday afternoon after a federal court ordered the money be restored. Mikie Sherrill said the ruling from the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals requires the funds to be released immediately and will allow construction to resume on the long-delayed rail project beneath the Hudson River. The U.S. Department of Transportation said it was reviewing any "unconstitutional practices." "It’s time — I would actually say it’s way past time — that the president releases the Gateway Tunnel funds," Gov. Sherrill said. "He’s illegally stopped them, the courts have spoken, and now it’s time for people to get back to work." In a lawsuit filed last week, New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport argued the funding freeze was unlawful and violated federal obligations.
