NUH doctor explains the causes, symptoms and treatment for distal radius fracture, also known as broken wrist. Distal radius is the part of the radius bone closest to the wrist. Fracture of the distal radius commonly occurs in two age groups: young and seniors. In young patients, distal radius fracture occurs after high energy trauma (e.g. falling from height or from sports). In seniors, especially those with osteoporosis, it usually occurs after a fall. Common symptoms include pain, swelling and wrist being bent in an unusual way. Less common symptoms include numbness in hand or fingers. Seek treatment by going to the emergency department. If fracture fragments are significantly out of place, the doctor will perform manipulation and reduction, then put the wrist in a back slab. You will see the orthopaedic doctor after 1 to 2 weeks where an X-ray is repeated to check the bone alignment. If overall alignment is acceptable, conservative treatment using cast or splint will be recommended. But if bone fragments remain significantly out of place, surgery may be required. An animation is created for this video to explain the surgery simply. An incision is made over the fracture site to realign the bone before securing it with plates, screws or pins. Recovery generally takes 3 to 4 months and an hand occupational therapist will help the patient to regain their range of motion, strength and return to daily activities. 00:00 - Introduction 00:15 - What is distal radius fracture? 00:31 - Causes 00:48 - Symptoms to look out for 01:01 - Treatment 01:40 - Treatment using surgery 01:54 - Recovery with hand occupational therapist For an appointment with NUH, visit https://www.nuh.com.sg/patients-visit...
