What do you do about a friend who is overly clingy, hangs on your every word, follows you around, and basically has no other friends? You have to encourage him to meet other people. Try to introduce him to your other friends. Include him in group activities. And gently force him to make new friends. One way to do that is to get him talking to someone else. Say you're talking about going to the gym, and one of your friends walks by. Let's call her Sally. You say, "Hey Sally, don't you go to the same gym as__________? You guys should talk. I gotta run. See ya." Then leave. That forces your friend to talk to Sally. Do this a few times, and if that doesn't work, have a heart-to-heart discussion with him. Say, "Listen, we will always be friends. I am not abandoning you. But you have to try and meet other people. It's good for both of us." That way your friend will hopefully take the cue and really try and expand his friendships.
